About Matthew

Born in Nottingham, England, Matthew Conduit studied Fine Art at Sheffield Polytechnic until 1981. Thereafter, he exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions of 'Groundwork' at Impressions Gallery, York and 'Groundwork' & 'Industrial Valley' at the Axiom Centre For The Arts, Cheltenham, and featured in various group exhibitions including ‘Disturbed Ground’ at Collins Gallery, Glasgow (with Paul Hill, John Davies and Keith Arnatt) and 'Image & Exploration - Directions In British Photography 1980-85' at The Photographers Gallery, London.

Matthew was Director at the Untitled Gallery in Sheffield in the mid 1980's and relocated the gallery to its current location in the city in 1988 (now Site Gallery). He then worked for over 20 years developing the Cultural Industries Quarter and Workstation/Showroom in Sheffield, and as a freelance creative industries consultant working across the UK.

Matthew stepped back from producing his own work during this period but started seriously making pictures again around 2004. Following an Arts Council England grant award to develop new work in 2009, Chora (works from the Wood Land portfolios) was first exhibited at the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery in Sheffield in 2011, his first solo show in over 20 years. A limited edition book, 'Chora', published by Contours featuring the work was launched alongside the exhibition (see below).

Matthew was commissioned to produce a new piece of work by Wirksworth Festival in Derbyshire in 2011 (see Quarry), and was honoured in the Lens Culture International Exposure Awards 2011.

Matthew has also worked with Heeley Trust since 2009 to develop Sum Studios in Sheffield, where his studio is based and where he continues to develop new work, and operate the Untitled Print Studio (see below).

More recently, Matthew curated Regeneration - The Sheffield Project, a major exhibition and publication reviewing the work commissioned and exhibited in the 1980s by Untitled Gallery concerning the city and it’s regeneration, featuring work by 14 photographers including John Davies, Anna Fox, John Kippin, Berris Conolly, John Darwell and himself. The exhibition was at the Weston Park Museum, Sheffield in 2021. A 3D tour of the exhibition, and details about the accompanying publication, can be found on the Untitled Print Studio website.
